I had a great idea, “Let’s go hiking in Big Bear this weekend”, I said to my sister. She agreed, “What a great idea”. It was late October 2008 close to Halloween and we had just gotten the first snow of the season in Big Bear. We had just purchased a couple of Yaktrax PRO’s from Footrite.com and we were dying to try them out. We love to hike and we thought what a blast to hike in the snow. We packed up the car late Friday night intending to leave around 6 o’clock in the morning on Saturday. From 56 degrees to 22 degrees by the time we reached the top. We had remembered to bring a thermos full of hot coffee and some snacks for a break. We planned to stop at that dinner that looks like an old hunting lodge, on the way home for a hot meal.
As we rounded a bend in the road a car coming from the other direction was in our lane and I swerved to miss it. I spun out of control and ended up rolling the car down an embankment. The car had rolled onto it’s top so we were upside down. It took us a while to realize that we were ok but, really shaken up from the crash. What do we do now? Both of our cell phones didn’t have any service in the mountains so we knew we had to walk to get help. As we got out of the car, we realized that no one would be able to see us from the road. We were in an isolated part of the mountain, no homes or any other traffic to be seen. It began to snow, lightly at first and then big flakes, the size of a quarter. We are originally from Pennsylvania and knew these big flakes meant it was going to stick and possibly turn into a blizzard like conditions. I assumed that we were about 5 miles away from any signs of humanity, so we knew we had to hike it.
Well, we were planning on going hiking but, we never expected to have been in an accident first and lost in the snow. We grabbed our Yaktrax PRO Traction Cleats, put them on and grabbed our coffee and snacks along with our back packs. Off we go to try and find help. The snow was really coming down now we couldn’t see 5 feet in front of us. We climbed onto the road and started walking through the snow. The snow had melted a bit and then frozen over again so without the Yaktrax, we would have been stuck at the crash site.
